November is National Family Caregivers Month (NFCM), a dedicated time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country. There are estimated to be over 50 million family caregivers in the United States. Caregivers often find their work to be rewarding, however, being a family caregiver is unpaid and often tiring. Caregivers don’t often hear the words “thank you” from those they are providing care for. Caregiving can take a toll on a person’s emotional, physical, and financial well-being.

NFCM offers an opportunity to raise awareness of caregiving issues, educate communities, and increase support for caregivers. There are many support services for family caregivers, locally and nationally.

For example, locally, Senior Resources of Guilford offers support groups, a book-lending library, and hot meal delivery. Visit their website at www.senior-resources-guilford.org. You can find information about their Family Caregiver Support Program by clicking here.

Nationally, the 2022 National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers details a three-year plan to support family caregivers including access to respite services, financial education, and updating Medicare and Medicaid policies so that family caregivers are included in the hospital discharge planning process. Visit acl.gov/CaregiverStrategy for more information.

Take a moment this week to honor someone you know who gives their time to take care of an elderly, disabled, or sick family member. Offer to run an errand. Drop off dinner one evening. Send them a quick text message to let them know you recognize their hard work. Or, send them a link to this article as a place to get started with learning about local and national caregiver resources. Showing your appreciation will mean so much!
