There are two options within the Master of Science degree.  To be eligible for all of them, applicants must complete a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by the enrollment date.  At the time of admission, The Graduate School does not differentiate between the thesis and coursework only tracks.

Coursework Only

The coursework only option (i.e., non-thesis) is most appropriate for those who are interested in obtaining an advanced degree but who do not intend to go on to doctoral studies. Most students who obtain a coursework only M.S. degree use this to enhance their position within their chosen career path

The thesis option is most appropriate for those who are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree or a research-related profession following their M.S. The thesis option requires that you complete an independent research project under the guidance of your advisor and your committee. This thesis project is typically conducted during the 2nd year of your program.

Sport and Exercise Psychology

Are you interested in the psychological dynamics of sport, exercise and physical activity? Choose from one of 3 tracks that UNCG offers in this field of study! Two tracks are offered in-person at our Greensboro campus and one track is offered entirely online. Students in all three programs have access to similar coursework with options tailored to career goals.

In-Person (Greensboro Campus):

Applied Sport Psychology: Prepares students with coursework and practical experiences to become a Certified Mental Performance Consultant.

Sport and Exercise Psychology (thesis): Prepares students with coursework and research experiences to pursue doctoral-level study in sport and exercise psychology at a research-focused university.

Sport and Exercise Psychology (coursework only): Prepares students with foundational knowledge and skills to pursue the next phase of their careers in a variety of applied, kinesiology-related professions that seek to promote enhanced performance, healthy behaviors, and positive experiences in sport, exercise, and physical activity settings.
