Modifications and Appeals

Please use the following to determine if you need to submit a Degree Works Modification Request or a Kinesiology Appeal. Failure to utilize the correct submission may delay processing and/or a decision on your request.

DEGREE WORKS MODIFICATIONS

A Kinesiology Degree Works Modification Request should be submitted for a number of standard situations or issues related to how your courses are displayed on your Degree Works. This may be related to courses that you have taken at UNCG or to transfer courses.

Modifications

A Degree Works Modification Request can be submitted to:

  • Count KIN 100X (1-credit experimental course) as a physical activity course.
  • Use KIN 231 (Recreational Games) or KIN 258 (Lifeguard Training) as a physical activity course:
    • KIN 231 or KIN 258 will be removed from your KIN electives and moved to the activity course block.
    • KIN 231 or KIN 258 will count as only ONE activity class, regardless of how many credit hours it has.
  • Use a Dance studio course as a physical activity course (two maximum):
    • DCE-prefix courses must be designated as studio classes to qualify.
    • Each approved DCE course will count as only ONE activity course, regardless of how many credit hours it has.
  • Use KIN 307 in the place of KIN 423 for the Sports Medicine & Movement Science concentration.
  • Substitute a UNCG course for a KIN major/concentration or minor requirement.
  • Substitute a Transfer course for a KIN major/concentration or minor requirement.
  • Count a Transfer course as a 300- or 400-level course.
  • A different request or issue related to your Degree Works. Please be prepared to explain your request or issue in detail.

GUIDELINES

Please wait until you have a final grade showing on your Degree Works for any UNCG class that you want to substitute or move before requesting a modification.*

*If you are planning to graduate THIS SEMESTER, you can request a modification while a class that you want to use is in progress. Please wait until after Add/Drop is over to submit your request.

Any Transfer course that you want us to consider as a KIN major or minor requirement must be present on your Degree Works. In most cases, you will need to provide a link to an official course catalog description or upload a syllabus for the transfer course that you want to substitute or that may not be credited correctly.

Some requests may require review by the KIN Undergraduate Studies Committee and some may require a formal KIN Appeal. We will contact you if we need any additional information or to provide next steps, so please stay attentive to your UNCG email inbox!

If your Degree Works Modification Request is approved, the department will submit a Curriculum Modification to the Registrar’s Office on your behalf. Please allow up to 7 days for the modification to be processed and the update visible on your Degree Works.

GENERAL EDUCATION

The Department of Kinesiology cannot modify Minerva’s Academic Curriculum (MAC) general education requirements. Your primary academic advisor must submit a Petition for General Education Credit on your behalf. Please work with your advisor.

16-Credit Retake Rule

In accordance with UNC System policy, undergraduate students may repeat up to 16 hours of undergraduate coursework during their academic career.

Students with extenuating circumstances that may warrant repeat coursework beyond the 16-hour limit should work with their academic advisor to determine if a Repeat Course Appeal should be submitted for consideration by university administration.

The Department of Kinesiology can only approve modifications for requirements related to:

  • The Kinesiology major
  • The Exercise Specialist concentration
  • The Sports medicine & Movement Science concentration
  • The Sport Coaching minor
  • The Sport & Social Development minor

Kinesiology Appeals

Department of Kinesiology appeals are issues above and beyond a standard Degree Works modification request. A formal Kinesiology Appeal should be reserved for situations in which you are disputing an outcome or asking to change or waive a departmental policy or Kinesiology degree requirement.

An appeal can be submitted for a range of issues including, but not limited to:

  • Non-standard Degree Works modification
  • Prerequisite to be admitted to a KIN-prefix course
  • Final grade in a KIN-prefix course*
  • KIN-prefix course attendance policy
  • KIN department rule or policy
  • Graduation requirements (course requirements, major GPA, etc.)
  • Other issues or requests

Your appeal must include

  • A formal appeal letter outlining the issue(s) and your detailed rationale for the outcome you are seeking. (Please see the sample student appeal letter for proper formatting of your letter.)
  • A PDF copy of your current Degree Works.
  • Supporting documents that help to illustrate the issue at hand and your attempts to resolve it.
    • Examples: PDF copies of email communications, a course syllabus, etc.
    • Issues regarding course prerequisites, an attendance policy, or a final grade must first be addressed with the instructor of the course. When filing an appeal, you must include all correspondence that you have had with the instructor (or program director.)

*Final grade appeals must abide by the University Final Grade Appeal Policy. Please make sure you have reviewed this policy and are aware of what merits an appeal.

Appeals are adjudicated by the KIN Undergraduate Studies Committee and can take a number of weeks for review and deliberation.

Please Note

University-level requirements CANNOT be appealed, as these cannot be waived or modified. This includes the following requirements:

  • Minimum 120 credit hour requirement for all UNC System undergraduate degrees.
  • Minimum 36 credits at or above the 300-level.
  • Minimum 31 credits in residence at UNC Greensboro.
  • Minimum 2.0 GPA overall.
