What can you do with a degree in Kinesiology? As UNC Greensboro Kinesiology alumni demonstrated during the October 2026 Alumni Colloquium, the possibilities extend far beyond the traditional career paths often associated with the field.
As every year, this Colloquium helped current graduate students look beyond coursework and research projects and recognize the many ways kinesiology professionals contribute to society. From university professors and researchers to entrepreneurs and leaders working with national sport organizations, the nine speakers highlighted the diversity of career opportunities within the field.
Perhaps equally important was the reminder of how far the UNCG Kinesiology community extends beyond campus. Alumni returned not only to share their accomplishments but also to offer advice, encouragement, and connections to the next generation of professionals. Their experiences demonstrated that careers do not always follow a straight path, and that the knowledge, relationships, and skills developed at UNCG can open doors to opportunities students may not have previously considered.
Meet Our Alumni
From Research to Real-World Impact
Several alumni highlighted how research and education continue to influence their careers, whether in university classrooms, professional organizations, or high-performance sport environments.

Dr. Amanda Aguilar, a 2021 EdD in Kinesiology graduate, is an Assistant Professor of Sport and Fitness Management at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Her doctoral research, Sports Specialization and the Family: Examining the Effects Outside the Lines, explored how youth sport specialization affects families, demonstrating the importance of considering the broader social and psychological dimensions of sport.
Dr. Lexy Ganesh, who earned her PhD in Exercise Psychology in 2019, is an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology at North Carolina A&T State University. Her doctoral research examined exercise and executive function in older adults. Dr. Ganesh also shared a personal lesson about navigating rejection. After hoping to secure a position at UNCG, her career ultimately took her to NC A&T, reminding students that professional setbacks can lead to unexpected and rewarding opportunities.

Dr. Brian Sutton, a 2024 EdD in Kinesiology graduate, serves as Senior Content Manager at the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). He also helped launch NASM’s Journal of Fitness, Wellness, and Human Performance, where he serves as managing editor. His work illustrates how research and professional education can come together to advance the fitness industry and make evidence-based knowledge more accessible to practitioners.
Shaping the Future of Sport
Other alumni demonstrated how kinesiology research and expertise can influence sport at the national and international levels.
Dr. Travis Anderson, who earned his PhD in 2021, is Manager of Performance Innovation for the U.S. Soccer Federation. During his presentation, Andersen strongly emphasized the importance of research, encouraging students to recognize how scientific evidence can inform decision-making and innovation in high-performance sport.

Dr. Jené Baclawski, an EdD in Kinesiology alumna, serves as Senior Director of Sport Development and Product at USA Football. Her career has taken her from coaching to coach education, learning design, and organizational strategy, including previous work with U.S. Soccer. Today, she contributes to the development of football, particularly the growth of flag football as the sport prepares for its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028. Reflecting on her doctoral education, Baclawski shared a powerful takeaway: “UNCG taught me to think, not just to know.” She emphasized how learning to ask meaningful questions, evaluate evidence, and communicate effectively has helped her navigate different roles throughout her career. She also encouraged students to connect with her, reinforcing the importance of maintaining relationships within the field.
Dr. Samantha “Sam” Goldenstein, a 2023 PhD graduate in Exercise Physiology, is an Associate Principal Scientist at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI). Her work focuses on research related to health, physiology, and athletic performance, including hydration science and product innovation. Her career demonstrates how scientific research can translate directly into the development of products designed to support athletes and physically active individuals.

Creating Your Own Path in Kinesiology
Not every professional journey follows a straight line. Several speakers highlighted the value of exploring different opportunities, building relationships, and remaining open to change.

Lake Buseth, a 2023 master’s graduate in Exercise and Sport Psychology, works in counseling and mental performance consulting. As a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) and Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor Associate (LCMHCA), Buseth brings together sport psychology and mental health counseling to support individuals in navigating performance challenges and personal well-being.
Dr. Rob Owens, a 2011 EdD in Kinesiology graduate and owner of Resolute Counseling and Performance Coaching, PLLC, is a familiar face at UNCG alumni events. Returning once again to share his experiences, Owens emphasized two lessons: the importance of networking and the willingness to become comfortable with being uncomfortable. His message encouraged students to pursue opportunities, make connections, and recognize that professional growth often happens outside their comfort zones.

Summer Sides, who earned her master’s degree in Sport Psychology in 2012 after completing undergraduate degrees in Exercise and Sport Science and Dance Studies at UNCG, shared her experiences as a creative entrepreneur. Throughout her career, she has explored different opportunities in the fitness industry, including opening her own Pilates and yoga studio. Now taking time away from some of her professional activities, Sides offered another valuable perspective: careers do not always need to follow a continuous upward trajectory, and taking time to reassess can be part of the journey.
