Several of our Ed.D. in KIN students recently presented at the National Academy in Higher Education (NAKHE) Conference 2022 that focused on the effective use of technology in these difficult times.

Crystal Reimer

Crystal Reimer presented a Virtual Poster Presentation titled “Mindfulness in PE: An Innovative Approach”, a research proposal that demonstrates evidence- based teaching in a secondary PE class for six weeks. Crystal offered these words about her experience at the conference: “I attended the NAKHE conference virtually. My presentation times were ongoing once the conference started as my material was posted on the mobile app (WHOVA) and on twitter for the beginning of the conference. I needed to be available and engaging on Twitter for attendees who were interacting with the presentation via my twitter handle (@ReimerPE). I received some activity, added some followers to my follow account number, and had a positive experience.

Lava Garner presented “The Virtual Implementation of YMCA Tai Chi Moving for Better Balance (MFBB).” Her poster presented findings from a partnership between WSSU DPT and fitness professionals at the YMCA.  Lava shared that this work is important because it highlights the feasibility of medical and fitness professionals collaborating through virtual (Zoom) means. Lava had this to say about her experience:  I really enjoyed presenting on Twitter and the support that UNCG colleagues and faculty offered.  I found the NAKHE conference to be the most welcoming conference I’ve ever attended and I only attended virtually.

Lindsey Nanney

Lindsey Nanney, along with her team  lead a face-to- face workshop presentation entitled: “Optimizing Student and Instructor Engagement in Instructional Physical Activity (IPAP) in a Hybrid World.”  Lindsey added: “Delivering IPAPs online and/or hybrid and doing so well, presents challenges and frustrations. The workshop focused on looking at the positive opportunities available to offering IPAP in a hybrid format, how to embrace those and monopolize on them. The workshop focused on how to transform what we’ve learned from teaching in a pandemic to strengthen IPAP beyond the pandemic.” The workshop engaged participants to consider evidence-based approaches that can improve both enrollment and the engagement of students and the instructor in a hybrid world. Use of self-determination theory and the promotion of self-efficacy were woven within the workshop delivery.

Lindsey added: “Delivering IPAPs online and/or hybrid and doing so well, presents challenges and frustrations. The workshop focused on looking at the positive opportunities available to offering IPAP in a hybrid format, how to embrace those and monopolize on them. The workshop focused on how to transform what we’ve learned from teaching in a pandemic to strengthen IPAP beyond the pandemic.” Lindsey also presented a poster with colleague Dr. John Lothes entitled: Change Score Differences Between a Normal Semester and 3 Pandemic Semester.

In addition to the presentations, our very own Dr. Diane Gil was inducted as a fellow at NAKHE!  Dr. Gil has had a major impact on the field of kinesiology, including mentoring countless students and faculty over the years. She has been recognized for her scholarship, service, and teaching at the University level and by a variety of professional organizations. She has been an active member of NAKHE for 43 years and is very deserving of the prestigious designation of NAKHE Fellow #48. Congratulations Dr. Gil!
