Exercise Research Study at UNCG

Are you interested in contributing to healthy aging research? Here’s your chance!

UNC Greensboro researchers, led by Dr. Jenny Etnier and Dr. Shin Park, are studying the process and benefits of exercise promotion in older adults. The team is actively recruiting participants for upcoming in-person exercise programs, and if you are 65 or older and do NOT regularly exercise, you may qualify!

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION

  • 65 years of age or older
  • Physically low-active (moderate-intensity exercise less than 60 min/week)
  • Able to walk without pain or the use of assisted walking devices
  • Plan to live in the area for the next 6 months
  • No clinically significant symptoms of cognitive impairment or active depression
  • No uncorrected visual or hearing impairment

Incentives

  • Contribute to healthy aging research
  • No cost instructor-led exercise program
  • Compensation up to $90 by completing study tasks

STUDY OVERVIEW

The first step is screening to determine eligibility. Qualifying individuals will be asked to participate in a no cost instructor-led exercise program for 6 months. The aerobic and strength training exercise program involves faded supervision so participants will initially attend 3 exercise sessions per week at UNCG and become independent by performing the exercise program at home by the end. Study participants will also attend a testing session (up to 3 hours) before and after the 6-month exercise program. Testing includes questionnaires and measures of fitness and thinking abilities. Before and every month during the exercise program, participants will also be asked questions relative to their exercise and to wear an activity monitor for 7 days.
