Each year, EdD Orientation is an event that students, faculty, and the department look forward to with excitement. It marks the first time the incoming cohort comes together, not only to learn more about the program, but to begin building the relationships and support systems that will carry them through their EdD journey. Throughout orientation, students had the opportunity to meet one another, connect with faculty, gather important resources, and begin seeing themselves as part of the broader EdD community.

The orientation opened and closed with panels featuring current EdD students and alumni, which became some of the most meaningful moments of the experience. These conversations gave incoming students a chance to hear honest reflections from those who have already been in their shoes. Panelists shared advice about managing busy schedules, balancing academic responsibilities with work and family life, navigating dissertation topics and directions, and making the most of the program. For many students, hearing from peers and alumni who have successfully balanced family, careers, and graduate school was especially reassuring. These conversations helped normalize some of the common worries students brought with them and reminded them that they are not entering this journey alone.
In addition to the student and alumni panels, students heard from faculty, the Graduate School, tech support, UNCG Libraries, career services, communications lab, cashiers’ office, and financial aid. These sessions provided practical tools and information to help students feel more prepared as they begin the program. Just as importantly, orientation also created space for students to relax, have fun, and get to know one another beyond the formal sessions. IceQueen joined the group for ice cream and conversation, giving students a chance to connect in a more casual setting. The cohort also visited Old Town to unwind and experience a well-loved campus spot.

Students from the Applied Sport Psychology program led a team-building session that brought plenty of energy and laughter to the day. Through activities such as a scavenger hunt, a minefield obstacle course, and some friendly competition, students were able to work together, communicate, and start building trust with one another. These moments helped the cohort begin forming connections that will continue to grow throughout their time in the program.
By the end of orientation, the 2026 cohort left feeling encouraged, supported, and excited for the journey ahead. One of the strongest takeaways students shared was the sense that they are surrounded by a strong community and network of support. In just a short time together, the cohort began to build confidence not only in the program, but in one another. As they begin this next chapter, students are looking forward to the growth, learning, and relationships that will shape their EdD experience. We wish them all the best as they embark on their EdD journey!
