About Dr. Griffin

Dr. Lauren Griffin’s journey to Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology started in 2009 as a graduate student at Virginia Commonwealth University earning her Master’s degree in Athletic Training.  Her program director, now Associate Dean of HHS, Dr. Scott Ross, would turn out to be a lifelong mentor and colleague.  She would move on to intern at the United State Naval Academy that provided a glimpse of what became her current passion in promoting and advocating for diversity within the athletic training profession.  A decade of clinical athletic training experience at Division 1 and Division III institutions would land her at UNCG to earn her EdD with her dissertation titled “Minorities in Kinesiology:  Challenges Encountered in the Pursuit of an Athletic Training Degree and Beyond”. Dr. Ross, who was the Program Director of the MSAT program at UNCG while Lauren worked on her EdD, would end up being an integral part of recruiting and appointing Lauren to the Coordinator of Clinical Education position with the MSAT program at UNCG.  Within this position, Lauren’s work and passion in advocating for diversity within the profession grows.  She is a member of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee in the Department of Kinesiology, a member of the EdD in Kinesiology Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee, an advisor for the Black Student Athlete Association for the Athletic Department, and a Mentor for the Ethnic Diversity Advisory Committee for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
